Arts & Culture Noire
Following years of lobbying and demonstrations France eventually passed a law recognising slavery as a crime against humanity. In 2006, May 10th, the country celebrated its first Memorial Day for the victims of slavery.
VoyageurNoir will meet you in the Jardins du Luxembourg where President Chirac celebrated this first remembrance day. Then your host will take you to monument sites, bookshops, libraries, galleries, museums and other spots where you'll discover pieces of French black history and heritage. This is the best opportunity to learn about the slaves' first descendants who became famous in France such as writer Alexandre Dumas, who entered the Pantheon lately, or the Chevalier de Saint-Georges known as the Mozart noir (the "black Mozart"). You'll also discover contemporary artists such as writer Maryse Condé, former teacher at Colombia university. You'll find painters, sculptors, poets and musicians mixing their African ancestry and their European lifestyles to create state-of-the-art chefs d'oeuvre. You'll have a lunch break and a tea or coffee at the end of the tour.
Take this chance to discover African-French history and heritage with an African descendant. Your host would love to share his/ her heritage and learn about your own history and lifestyle. Isn't that a good cultural exchange?
